Hyperthyroidism is usually cause by abnormal growth of the thyroid gland... which can eventually front to a goiter (the large lump around the Adam's apple). It's cause by either an overactive pituitary gland or the body's perception (real or false) that the rank of thyroid hormone is too low. The gland grows larger to produce more thyroid hormone.
There are three treatment options:
1. Antithyroid drugs which block production/reception of thyroid hormone for mild cases.
2. Radioactive ablation of the thyroid, or administering radioactive substances which verbs hormone producing cells contained by the thyroid.
3. Thyroidectomy which removes part or adjectives of the thyroid gland for the most severe cases.
